What Is an Haiku?

1. Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry.
2. When modelled in English, a haiku is formed of 3 lines adding up to a total count of 17 syllables. (5-7-5)
3. It supposed to be simple, intense, and direct.
4. A Haiku is composed of:

• 2 elements drawn from every day life (images/ideas/objects) and exposed side by side,
• and a cutting word – usually a verbal element – which links the former items together. This “kireji” (=cutting word) sets their relation to one another and exposes the context of their reunion.
