Ephemeral Life

– i –

Little shadows
dancing on asphalt screen.
Wings fluttering unseen,

owning the air,
as we are bound to ground.
Tiny weightless bodies,

heaving high and low,
flitting up and down,
gently brushing by,

circling, grazing
disturbed skin, stunned
by foreign touch.

– ii –

A thousand little feet
moving all at once, crawl
in synchronised effort.

Stretching and retracting
– paced strength, proportional
to micro sized flesh.

Petite scavengers feed
on wooden dust,
damp and decayed.

– iii –

Airborne organic matter
swallowed by giant
running mouth.

Teeny ramping beast
burst and spread
Run over by truck.

– iv –

Sun kissed corpse
leaves dried stain
on the ground,

washed away
by flowing water
descending

from the sky
in the fortnight.
Leaving no trace

behind.

– v –

Organic life resorbed,
absorbed back to Earth –
mother core running

an eternal cycle.

I love your words playing with nature, intertwining the little fluttering wings and the multitude of tiny feet, really exquisite, and a neat finale, with the cycle of life. Nicely done

  5. They’re 5 lovely poems standalone. Even better when you put them together 🙂. I’m left with an uncontrollable desire to sing “Circle of Life” now 😆.
Those little creatures live such a short life. It makes me feel lucky to have all the time I do, even if it still doesn’t feel long enough. In fact, now I’m back to experiencing the same feelings your last poem left me with, that need to do something more with my life. I should look to your Diary whenever I need some motivation from now on 😄.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful writing 🙂.

Haha, hopefully someday you won’t need to be a fly for that. Hopefully I’ll, grown some wings,

          1. Don’t be too hard on yourself! Most people can sing! If your can hear your voice being off key then you can work on it. Problems arise when you can’t hear it 😉

I’m late to the party of admirers, but … goodness, isn’t this something! These vignettes are gorgeous pearls of observation. Your in depth perusal of the microverse draws attention to your acute awareness of the world around you. And you draw the reader in to sit by your side and observe quietly. You even make decay sound less abhorrent than I had ever considered – that it belongs.
I continue to be breathless at how you feel and see this world. You are one of a kind 🙂

    1. Hey D! Thank you so much for this detailed appreciation. When I read your comment I felt like a major author who had gotten a positive review shared in a poetry journal. ❤ Decay is part of life. It doesn't always stink. Decaying wood is just dust. Thank you again for your warm words, they are lighting a soft fire in my heart. ❤
