He walked away from the fire.
Head down, shoulders heavy with the loss he’d just suffered –
the sight of his friend engulfed by the will of the almighty ocean
imprinted on his mind with a whirling slap.
He had tried his best to rescue him,
but when he dove in,
it was already too late.
His lungs lacked the oxygen he would have needed to head deeper,
and his friend’s were already filled with a lethal dose
of salty draught he could never recover from.
Back on the shore, his dripping limbs felt shattered.
Heart pierced by the hailing sound of the ocean,
he looked absent, torn between worlds.
Eyes locked to the ground, feet entwined with the path
he had yet to walk, he held on to life’s rope, with all the strength he had left,
and thought of the souls that breathed still.
He then turned around and bowed his head to the sea,
bidding farewell to a dear hand whose shared memories
reached inside his broken chest in one final call.
Sore bones breached from within,
he stepped forward leaving behind
part of his soul to journey along
with the spirit of the sudden departed.
A sad story told in your gorgeous words. The last two lines especially so, the soul, not in a religious sense but that inner part of a person that defines who they truely are, being torn by the tragedy just sums up the boy’s horror and pain beautifully.
It happens every summer here, although it usually ends even more tragically with the boy jumping in to rescue his friend also drowning in his attempts. It’s even more frightening after watching my own friend get dragged away by currents in the calmest seas I’ve ever seen just last weekend. He was fine and managed to get back to the coast eventually but it could have been a lot worse.
Glad you got some time to write. I hope you get more chances soon, for both our sakes 💗😄. I’m still waiting for the end of a certain ‘short’ story 😄.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend. You must have been so worried and it happened and relieved of an indescribable type of relief when he made it out. We hang on to life tightly but it is way more fragile than we foresee. Sight of relief shared here at the thought of your friend.

It will take something truely drastic for me to not look forward to your next creation. I’d say I’ll always get that wave of giddiness when I see you’ve posted something ☺️

Ah, welcome back to your home of words my dear B ❤
"a lethal dose of salty draught' is the type of worded pearls you bestow so easily and I have missed. This is tragically beautiful and stays with me long after the sorrowful sound of the sea fades….

Thank you my D ❤️ I am happy to get a few moments to write again too. It feels wonderful as always to be creative. I just wish time was more generous with its infinite stretching so that I would never have to take a break.
Thank you again for your lovely words. Reading you always warms my heart ❤️ 😘

Brilliant writing, so expressive, emotional and well worded.
Love the twist of them having left a part of themselves in the ocean as opposed to the presumed dead friend, great twist!
